Herman Herst writes in one of his books, how FDR would look for or have someone look for poor copies of stamps for his collection!

When you get the tour of the Roosevelt home in Hyde Park,,the Parky giving the tour tells you that the Roosevelt collection was only valuable because it belonged to FDR ..otherwise the sum of its parts was not really world class !!

Yes, but you can't afford a stamp hobby on a president's salary when everything else is either given, paid for, or taken care of for you!

I lived near FDR's house in NY for a while and got to know this old woman who had worked as a maid in the Mansions...She said that FDR's place felt more like a middle class home than a stuffy mansion. He was just a regular guy and it wouldn't surprise me that he had mediocre collection...The maid said the saddest part of the house was that FDR and Eleanor really had no romance they just co-habitated when she was not staying in Valkill. and that's the inside scoop
