[Sorry for the delay/interruption, but something went haywire so that my post was sent up as I was working on it, and I was unable to log back onto the site to fix it. It would not reconnect until now.]

If scanner illumination could be controlled and set to come in at a sharp oblique angle, it would be much easier to scan grills. Many are the times I have found that a strong grill does not show up nearly so well in a scan, and weak grills often do not scan at all. It doesn't mean they are not there.

In this case I can see grill points in the designated area, but they are not strong points by any standard. None of them are easy to see in this latest pic. I do see more of them than in the first scan, but that may be because I have learned about the point shapes of the various grill states and know what to look for.

The I-grill first received major status in the 2013 Scott Specialized, and near the new listings for that year there is an article by Ron Burns discussing the nature of all the points on grilled NBNCo Banknote Issues. It is an expansion of a study he first published in Opinions for the PF. Here you will learn some things that flatly contradict what some of you apparently are expecting to see. I heartily recommend it. But as for the original question, the grill does not seem to me to be an I-grill, but that is due to the spread of the distribution. The shape of the grill points for late state H-grills and early state I-grills is very similar. The points for early state H-grills generally were not very deeply impressed and so, because the points on the roller were sharper, tend to show up as tiny dots without much shape.

In the end it will do us no good to beat our breasts lamenting that we cannot see the grills in the pictures, nor that we cannot convince the skeptics. We see what we see, and go from there. I see them, and more importantly smauggie sees them, and without better visibility not much more can be said.

I do not recommend lifting this stamp, however, because at least one corner (UR) would separate off, and there seems to be a large crease or tear along the left side. It may be that it only stays together while attached to the envelope.

Thank you for the information and helpful comments essayk. I agree about not soaking. I only paid $3 for the cover, so I am not disappointed in the least.

essayk, I agree with all of your last post's arguments.

As for visualizing what smauggie can see that we can't yet, I don't have an easy solution. My first grilled stamp will arrive to me soon and I will experiment with how to use a conventional scanner to best image a grill from the front of a stamp.

With a fair amount of skill, a scanner's light source can be modified, but isn't an ideal solution for everyone. Perhaps scanning a stamp in 4 different rotational positions ( 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees) and then using photo manipulation software can enhance the grill. littleriverphil may be onto a good idea that needs to be expanded. It will take further experimentation to find a way to utilize a common scanner.

Taking a photograph with an obliquely angled light source may be a useful method to image the grill. However, doing so is not always easy and may take a lot of time.

I've never had to adjust any scanner settings to get the grill to show.

Hello stallzer, the issue at hand is that the possibly grilled stamp is on cover. In this case, it would be dangerous to remove it from the cover and then scan it.

No worries. It's all good.

All arguments made in good spirit are worth sharing. Arguments that are subjective, fallacious, or intended to not be constructive are what are worth deriding. We're all human and I've made my fair share of uninformed and/or poorly formed arguments.
