Not just the difference. Back when, if the clerk determined your item
would need, say, $4.68 in postage, he would mark that where the stamps
went, take your money, then take the next customer. Then when the line
was serviced, open his drawer, apply a pair of $2 stamps, a 50 cent stamp,
a 17 cent stamp and a 1 cent stamp or another combination totaling the
$4.68 based on what happened to be in his drawer. There just isn't need
for that kind of arsenal of stamps anymore.
