george, call me sentimental, but I'm happy you'll be keeping the coil intact.

georgesstamps,
Nice find. Where did you get it?

-----------------------------

stampcrow,
I think that horizontal alignment along a roll would stay relatively consistent, but vertically they could vary enough for superb centering in that orientation. Despite having up to 25 joint lines, I would think it is unlikely that any were superbly centered even in one orientation. However, I am speculating.

I have no idea of the relative rarity of rolls surviving compared to the number of superb singles.

I wonder, will Mr. Ginter on roll the stamps to study them? If so, it would be great to see some pictures.

Was that an ebay lot that ended about a month or so ago? I remember looking at a big lot that had a few rolls in it.

For me, the dollars alone don't do all the talking. Market is not the only basis for decision making...

Business aside, is there a greater philatelic value in keeping the roll intact or in breaking it? I suggest that before you break it you consult with some ranking specialists to see whether or not this roll makes any difference.

I agree with this 100%. I also am pleased to hear that you do not intend to break up this coil. To me, items such as this are historical artifacts, and deserve to be treated as such.

Realistically, I must admit that such sentiments are ultimately futile (how many auction listings do you see that include a recent cert for the block from which the stamp was broken?), but it pleases me to know that at least some such things are being kept intact, for the time being, at least.
