Found A 24 Cent C Grill I Think, Please Help, Need Advice.

Winston, I can't tell if your comment was meant to bait him to get a rise, or you hadn't gotten around to reading the thread at that point, but he has been railing about the grill being points up. For me this issue is not about point up or points down, it is about the grill size. I can't get a clear enough look at it in the images provided to be sure of the point count. I have done counts based on both sets of pics and I always come up with 16x17. I need a better pic than he can provide to move beyond that.

Some are seeing it as a double grill with one impression slightly shifted. I can't rule that out either based on these photos. Could it be an unlisted experimental? That cancel is of a type sometimes used with experimentals, so I can't dismiss the possibility out of hand, but until I can establish the point count and other grill characteristics I could not go for that option either. Given his strong feeling about it, he should send it in.

Don suggested that submitting it for an opinion would deal with the frustration he has expressed, and I have to go along with that. As long as we cannot be given an adequate picture to study, I have no opinion.

I couldn't look at it anymore without doing the pencil lead trick,now I have no clue what it is,I'm still sure that the pencil lead is filling in the indentations because the front looks like points up,I won't put pencil lead on the front though,it's off to have looked at tomorrow,this is my best picture out of over 50 I took,my camera just can't do the job,it's 16 X 17 or 18,sometimes I see 17,sometimes 18,not even 100% sure about points up anymore,more questions than answers now,oh well,thanks for looking.

The same gentleman that sold me the stamp has a 3 cent stamp also,you guys think this is real ? If it's not I know he honest and has no idea,he's just selling old stamps.

Please be aware that #99 (F grill) are selling in the <$200 (US) range for used copies.

For this stamp (on the original post) and if it is real, then their might be additional value for the double grill. That said, the major fault (large tear) swings the value in the opposite direction. Of course if it is some previously unknown variety, then it is anyone's guess what the value might be. And if it is a fake, then it is worth practically nothing.

We can yap about this until the cows come home; the OP needs to spend some money and get the stamp into the hands of someone knowledgeable.

That full grill looks suspect to me but perhaps it is the image. Weeds tend to grow together. The seller might be honest but the real question is 'does he know his US stamps?'. Inexperienced buyers and inexperienced sellers do not combine for good results.

Those are cheap because, well, they aren't exactly nice copies. First one is off center, perf faults, reperfed at left. Second one very off center and oxidised, third one off center, at least 2 perf tips added plus other small faults.

Want a NICE one that's fault free and centered? Not happening for under $200. If they were that cheap I'd have a lot more of them.

Really nice 24c 1861s, be they 70s, 78s or 99s are quite tough to find, especially with true color.

The all-over grill is fake.
If you ever see a genuine Scott 79, you'll see missing and fluffy perforations. Because they grilled the stamp prior to perforating it, the grill weakened the stamp so that it did not perforate or tear well. Hence, why they switched to smaller grills that avoided the perforations.

Search the Siegel website for Scott 79 and you'll see for yourselves.

The 24c has a double grill, one at a couple degree angle to the other.

Regardless, you won't be able to sell either without an expert opinion, so why don't you just send them both off and stop fighting with people who disagree with you on the internet. If you're right, you can post a big "I told you so, you idiots" note and we'll genuflect at your feet.
