Postage Due - Colors

Red Brown & Deep Red Brown is my guess on these. First stamp doesn't fit with the browns. They are difficult colors.

Both of yours look red brownish to me, not claret! They look similar to mine.

The one on left perhaps could be just brown but right definitely red brown in comparison.

Phil...your left stamp has the New York string of pearls pre-cancel, in case you didn't know it already... Here's a couple of others.

Than you Al E Gator, I did know it was the string of pearls. The cancel and the stamp seem faded, The NY string of pearls is usually a darker shade of blue, as on this J6. Maybe too many soakings, chlorine tap water? The red fan is a Boston cancel. At least two sizes and types of these.

After perusing several of the PF certificates for these early postage dues, I begin to wonder whether the "experts" can be very confident in some of their identifications. A number of the stamps in each of the first two color groups would appear to me to belong in one of the others. I realize that the individual stamps were added to the PF data base at different times, making color comparisons questionable. Nevertheless, after eyeballing the screen for many minutes, I found myself agreeing with rgstamp ... it's time to call the guys in the white coats. Stare at my own dues as long as I dare, the best I can hope for is that maybe I have the majority identified correctly. But getting all of them right ... not likely.
