Thanks for the info. All the big approval dealers I can remember from that
time were on the east coast: Harris, Littleton, Jamestown, Kenmore, Mystic.

Fake is not the right word here. I think these covers find themselves between souvenir and Art cover, designed to increase interest in collecting stamps and well as history & geography.

While technically, the word fake can be used, I would agree with Warrehouse and suggest it would not be the proper term. They were never created with the intent to deceive.

A lot of stamp shows all over the world have souvenir covers created that do not have post office cancels, but often have custom made "show cancels". The post office usually only has a booth at the larger shows.

They really are more equivalent to cinderellas.

I googled "fantasy cover" for stamps, and it does appear that it is one of the terms used to describe these types of covers. The space mail fantasy covers are rather interesting!

In this case, Tina it's a imitation rather then a fake, not intended to defraud postal services nor collectors, as khj pointed out. Rather to create something fun and interesting. This form of covers cross over many lines of philatelics; stationary, postmarks, stamps, worldwide or topical subjects, while simultaneously encouraging interest in history, geography as well as culture.

If I can recall these were free with entry or nominal fee at some stamp expos & shows.
