Wasn't the earlier name Sandwich Islands, before they called them the Hawaiian Islands?

If so, then the Sandwiches discovered the Sandwich Islands.

But I like the other ones too.

And although the Aborigines were in Australia first, they can not be counted as "discovering" it as, unlike Cook (or the Dutch), they did not make maps etc. Cook / the Dutch explorers were the first Westerners to find it. Likewise for the Hawaiians... or Sandwiches.

The Cook stamps, 1732-1733. Although Cook wasn't the first to discover Australia, he was the first Englishman, claiming the east coast for England. Since we were settled by England not long after, to them he was the discoverer.

khj, No. Then it would have been the Sandwichians. The Hawaiians did not invent the Sandwich, nor did they ever eat one.

This one was a lot closer with 1421-22 squeaking out a win at 11 to 8.

I'll post the next pair later this afternoon.
