The new 2015 Scott Specialized Catalogue of the United States should prove to be very helpful is identifying the different varieties in the Liberty Series. Hopefully my copy should arrive tomorrow(today is Columbus Day) The 1847 USA site has been very helpful thru the years:

Wonder what will be added or changed?

The new 2015 Specialized has completely redone the Liberty series - the wet printings are now the major numbers instead of the a minor numbers.

Just received my 2015 Specialized today and as promised there are major changes in Scott catalog numbers. They have more clearly addressed the Liberty wet and dry issues. A re-listing of Scott numbers in many cases. The wet issues have become the first major number regardless of normal Scott customs as well as a few other changes. Collectors & dealers will have to do some housekeeping and re-assign the proper numbers to stamps on hand. Some work for many of us but in long run it will help.

I imagine it will take quite a few years to bring this together since most collectors don't bother with buying a new Scott Specialized Catalog every year -- many will just keep with the old numbering system until a new catalog is warranted -- which may be several years into the future.

Although less detailed, I wonder if the less expensive Scott Pocket Catalog or the Postal Service Guide to US Stamps will reference any revised numbering scheme at a lower cost than buying an entirely new Scott Specialized Catalog.

I doubt on the Pocket Catalog, and it is too late for the Postal Service Guide for 2014. Usually the USPS Guide is about 1/2-year ahead of Scott with preliminary values of issues to September of the current year & Scott going up to June or so. USPS Guide does illustrate issues not valued but issued (or planned for issue). I have several Guides and none are as specific as the Scott on variations, except maybe the Classic period.

With the Liberty Series Scott number changes in the new Scott 2015 Specialized Catalog of US stamps, I wanted to look more deeply into the series and was able to find an out of print used copy of The Liberty Series by C. David Eeles, and Anthony S. Wawrukiewicz Ken Lawrence published by American Philatelic Society (2007)and ordered it today. Seems this is a comprehensive 262 page study of the 1954-1968 stamp series;( although Scott 1059Ab was issued in 1980 rotary press coil dry printing 10 vertical,tagged/dull gum- for some reason not listed in this new catalog). The book seems to be hard to find.

I got the book several years directly from C. David Eeles. It is an interesting read with a lot of good info if you are interested in the Liberty series. The Look coil is discussed in depth, as well as the 2 cent Jefferson on Silkote paper.
I highly recommend it to a Liberty Series fan.

Looks like someone (probably me) needs to create a reference chart for the new and old Scott Numbers. By the way, this is not the first time the Liberty Series Scott Numbers have been changed. When first listed (Scott Specialized, 1955) the 3c sheet stamp was #1034.

For those who are interested, I should address the only real complaint the book reviewers had. They expected it to be the same as The Prexies - each stamp covered in detail. Instead, we chose to just use the 3c as an example of how to study each issue in the series. We wanted to create a enjoyable read, rather than just a data accumulation.

Looks like we have a celebrity in our mists. C David Eeles is one of the authors to The Liberty Series book I spoke of earlier.

Looking forward to studying you all's work on Liberty Series. Hopefully we will find a source to get the book. Thank you.

UPDATE. I understand David Eeles, co-author has a few copies left of The Liberty Series book (out of print since 2007)for those who are interested - suggest you email him. His member name is CDavid

Maybe he will share in time with us any new developments in the Liberty Series since his book was published(2007)

Hello Mr. Eeles, nice to see you here. Welcome to the forum. I still love the Liberty Series and now have to relearn some cataloging. In my opinion, the book on the Liberty Series is far better than the book "The Prexies" Your (et. al.) book is a far more entertaining and interesting read.

Oh, I just realized that you may not remember me. I ordered the book and some stamps from you several years ago. You may remember me as Ron Humphrey.

I haven't got through this whole thread yet so if this has been discussed then please excuse/ignore me or my question. So moving right along...

Wasn't the 8˘ JOHN J. PERSHING [painting by J.F.Boucher] stamp taken out of this series for some reason? Now I'm not 100% certain of this, but I certainly do remember hearing of such talk about it. What do you know of this (if anything at all?) if I may ask? Thank you for listening -Jeffrey

You are correct. The Pershing Stamp is now Scott #1214 (formerly #1042A) as announced by Scott on 10/01/2012.

It may be worthwhile to link these previous threads to this one, as it is on the same subject:

Mr Eeles, if you are still monitoring the post, I would very much like to purchase a copy of your book but this forum will not let me message you as I am fairly new. Please let me know how to contact you

If you use the 1041A/1054A Palace of the Governors, it might also be interesting to mention #944 - Santa Fe Kearny Expedition. The building in the stamp is also the Palace of the Governors.
