Make sure the Mao set is perf 13. The fakes are a different perforation; I think perf 14, give or take half a perf.

See, I told you there were a lot of premiums in the pre-1955 DDR!

I already have the Mao set, and also the bottom 2 sets, I think. I don't think I have the Academy of Science portrait sets; I'll have to go check.

Looks like I might visit your ebay auction...

Where did you find them? The Mao set are a great find if they're the right perf. My 2004 Michel has them at €360 MNH or €100 MH

The Michel is way over-priced. But Tina should get a nice wad of money for it. It's been a premium item for as long as I can remember -- it's a real premium item, not a speculation item.

I disagree with Michel being overpriced on German issues. It's more likely that Scott is underpriced. Of course, neither CV bears any relation to the actual market!

I respectfully disagree. I think both Scott and Michel are overpriced for those sets, with Michel being even more overpriced.

The 2009 Scott catalog value for Mao set MNH is $285. I don't have the 2004 price, but I believe it was around $240; compared to €360 for Michel about the same time.

Actual sales price will vary, of course, especially based on region. But quite frankly, I don't know anyone who paid even close to either catalog price. That doesn't mean there aren't people who did pay full catalog price.

I bought mine retail (not wholesale) a couple years ago for something like $60. That's actually the most I've ever spent for a DDR set, and that's because that set does warrant the premium, and has been steadily moving up over the years. It is true that the retail price outside the US is higher. But I still don't see it selling at the Michel price. But then again, I only have a little portal into the world. There may be a lot of full catalog price sales of this set that I don't know about.

Either way, Tina should get a nice wad of money for it!

If you do not have a perforation gauge, the stamp is big enough where you can count the perfs. Take a decent metric ruler (one that has millimeter measurements on it). Line it up to the side of the stamp and count how many teeth per 20 mm. If you count exactly 13, it's probably genuine. If you count more than 13 (say 13.5, 14, or 14.5, I don't remember), then it's probably not a genuine original.

And yes, I have seen fakes offered on the online auctions.

Given the value of the stamps that you are selling, Tina, I think it is worth your while to buy a perforation gauge.

By the way, your Mao set is very well centered. Those pre-1955 DDR stamps are a very very nice find!

Tina, €360 is the European Euro currency. Michel is a German catalog.

It is approximately equivalent to US$495.
