I used the grill last night to cook some pre-St. Patrick's Day Steaks!

(Q, I bet you were just waiting for someone to throw that grill in)

Yep, Tom, let's see if any can come up with the answer or cheat and search old posts.

Cooking grill? Well, ebay often brings up cooking grills as optional items when I search for grills on the US stamps section.

Here's another one that should be a little easier than the grill stamp. It looks like a #351. What do you think?

Very good, rod. This 5c coil is a trimmed #335. A close look at the right side does reveal the tiniest bit of remains of perforations. The bottom right side is trimmed slightly irregular. Someone also trimmed top and bottom perfs at parallel angles to give the appearance of machine cut coil separation; a feature that is quite common on coils.

Now since everyone except Kirk is out grilling their steaks, I'll break the silence on the faked #142. First, nice going, Kirk. The grill is slightly larger than it should be and it has an extra row of horizontal grills. Also, the grill points are up instead of down.

Well, I didn't get it exactly, Marty.

But I'm encouraged that I at least recognized the problem area, even if I didn't get the specifics. Good info about the grill points.

And thanks for starting this thread -- very helpful.

Thanks for that example Marty,
We antipodeans don't come across these much, in fact I have never seen one in the flesh, so it's nice to read about them.

I am at a loss to understand why the US took that route, I would have thought it easier to knurl the face of the cancel hammers, so every time you struck a stamp, it would penetrate the paper with its own "grill" for the ink to penetrate.

Kirk, maybe you didn't get it exactly, but your were on the right track and not far from the facts.
