I just read a book by Michener and in it he praised the Armed Services of New Zealand and Australia but since there are no photos in the book I wondered what the soldiers, navy etc. looked like. Well, I know now!

Jubilee:
ANZAC Day was honoured at the National War Memeorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Ottawa. There was a parade and the Australian & NZ flags flew along side the Maple Leaf. The Union Jack flew above all. A 21-gun salute, two minutes of silence, and a Flypast.

Jubilee: Your examples were inspired from the cover of a women's magazine. "Sons of Australia..steady and strong" |

David, I didn't know that. I find that level of mutual respect warming.
I knew about the magazine, but that's the first time I've seen it. Well done Rod.
I'll be at the dawn service in our little town, which is very moving, but I may not march this year. |

Jopie: William Ellis Green (WEG) famous Australian cartoonist: Born in 1923, Green grew up in Essendon two doors down from Australian rules footballer Dick Reynolds. Torn between becoming an architect or a cartoonist after leaving Essendon High School, he studied architecture because his mother warned: "You'll starve if you're a cartoonist |

Thanks all for the input on the armed forces-- I just thought the stamp hilarious and now I know the the one responsible for this cartoon! In my topical collecting I have come to know the names and works of writers, painters, etc-- It is always nice to know a little more about the persons behind the stamps! |

I am not sure if this NZ National Patriotic Fund envelope has any significance in the Gilbert and Ellice islands. The cover is obviously philatelic, as the postal rate was only 2d. I do know NZ Coast Watchers were stationed thought the GEIC during WWII. |

It's 8.30am on Anzac Day. The Dawn Service in our little town (pop 2,000) is over. Despite the torrential rain, about 200 people attended. Going to the 11am Service, but not marching this year. For anyone in Australia and New Zealand participating in events, or serving members in Iraq, Afghanistan, Timor Leste and anywhere I don't know about, have a good day.

Laswabbie, the book is 'Return to Paradise' where the writer visits all the islands in the Pacific where the fighting forces were in WWII-- I found it a very interesting book-- like all his books ! Jopie
