Hi, I'm Ernesto, from Argentina. In the most important auction site of Argentina is published a high value stamp (10 dollars), "department of State" http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar...-pierdas-_JMThe auction started $1 (0,3 US dollars), and now reached $150 (about U$S 50). In my Yvert catalogue I found a value of 4000 euros for this stamp. I just want an opinion about this item. Ernesto PS: I don't really know if this post should be in "Auctions". I apologize if so.

If it's what it looks to be--a Scott# O70, then your values are close.
Mystic sells them (high retail) for $4000 mint, $9500 used.
The stamp in your photo has a couple of problems that keep it from high end pricing but it appears to be pretty fine. |

Welcome to the forum Ernesto! This is a rare stamp. I would be very suspicious of it. The perfs look very irregular to me, not evenly spaced. If it was authentic, it just doesn't make sense to sell this stamp on this auction site. Why not offer it to a New York dealer? If it is too good to be true, then it probably is. |

I have to agree, there's reason to be suspicious. My biggest hint would be the word 'facsimile' between 'Department of' and 'State.'
Thanks for the blow-up photos, t. The paper looked vaguely suspicious small, but you really can't miss that now. |

Thanks a lot! I use to buy some items to that seller. He uses to tell when an item is a reproduction... This time he has "forgotten" to mention it (and the site has not a policy about real/fake stamps). Anyway, I think is too risky buy such a stamp without a certificate. About me: I just restarted my worldwide collection last year (left it 17 years ago!). Right now I'm collecting revenue stamps, worldwide. I'd like to have a little group of revenues from every country! I like british colonies pre-1940, too. If someone is interested I'm open to trades :-) Best regards and thanks again, Ernesto |

Welcome Ernesto
A few of us like you have restarted our collections after a few years away.
I have purchased many lots on line in the past few weeks. I will keep my eyes open for any spare revenues I have.

Hello Ernesto, I guess revenues require a different type of catalog, fortunately many are inexpensive and not that popular a topic with many collectors..so you should find people..possibly myself as trading partners. my daughter and her husband were in Argentina a couple of years ago..they were looking at a more local place to get away for a week and the travel agent said for two hundred dollars more you can go to Buenos Aires..so they went..my son in law went to buy a pack of cigarettes and check things out and when he came back to the hotel he told my daughter "just think Manhatten" the high light of the trip was when they went to a soccer(football) game and the fans of the losing team tried to burn the stadium down ! |

I found a similar stamp in my grandfather's collection. It is from the State Dept but is $5. The word "facsimile" is written in the same place on the stamp in very, very small letters. It appears that he paid good money for it. Does anyone now the story behind this particular forgery? |
