The only cancels I have that I know of from a post office of old that no longer exists is from Avery, Oklahoma. I need to research and find out when the P.O. was shut down, but I have in fact stood in the ruins of it.

Postal History of "ghost towns" can be a specialty all its own. As for Avery, Oklahoma, the post office was in operation from September 16, 1902 to August 26, 1957.

Here's a write up excerpted from the book "Ghost Towns of Oklahoma" that provides a glimpse into that location:

It seems that, soon, there will be lots of postmarks from closed post offices if the USPS has their way.

I agree. I also find it interesting that the USPS is not providing much advanced information about the actual date of closure of underperforming post offices, but just proceeds to close them with little notice.

There was a time, back in the 1950's I believe, when there were actually "Last Day" postmarks that were offered from closing post offices that became a minor collectible. A collector could send in SASE's and the post office would handstamp a cancel on them on the last day of operation.

With the USPS continuing to look at revenue sources from collectors by providing a whole array of stamp related merchandise, I'm surprised they haven't thought about offering these "last day of use" postmarks from closing post office locations.
