sounds good to me ! some people get obsessive about buying..there was a guy on stampoffers who had abut 8,000 buying feedbacks and they said he just threw them in boxes..i wonder when he was going to work on them ??? |

I feel the pain with those suffering out there. I was just recalled to work after being on Furlough for 18 months, my company down sized us by 33% just recently I was able to get back online and start catching up with life's bills. So for me there is currently a monthly budget for all things considered non essential to life, unfortunately that includes stamps and supplies.
however when I do get something in the mail it makes it just that much better.
So for those of you out there suffering stay strong, look to family and friends for help there is no shame some day you can help them. This hardship brought my family closer together taught us the value of family and hard learned lessons of finance.

Does the stamp market fluctuate like the stock market? It might be a good time to buy stamps and throw them in boxes. |

Mark296 its my understanding that the stamps gods watch us all and what ever we buy will decrease in value what ever you don't buy will go up...
NOTE: I believe thats why Rod owns everything he sees hedging his bets... I'd love to see a picture of Rods work desk anyone else? maybe thats a good new topic when I get a day off, topic pictures of your work space... (better start cleaning you have like 3 days.) |

Hahaha, Edwin my <all> stamps would be worth a box of old rope. It is common sense that expensive quality stamps make good investments, but that's not why I collect.
For a nice guaranteed investment of a $500 dollar Sydney Harbour Bridge, I'd rather a $500 phossick box.
My budget is around $30 to $50 a month (small huh? :) way out of phossick box purchase now, so I buy from circuit sheets.
The only divergence I have is Literature, now and again where I may fork out >$100.

Over the past couple of months I have been putting together stamps in Lots and sending them off to be sold at my favorite auctions. Some of the stamps I would not normally put to auction but with the currant times, thinking out side the square is needed. I am hoping that what I sell I can spend at the same auction. The thinking is to stop spending the cash flow and use stamps to buy stamps. Anyway I am hoping this will work. John |

Good one Rod! That computer of yours must have one of the best stamping collections around. The time alone you have put into your collection must be huge.It has got to be the best way to get all the stamps we will never be able to afford plus the info that goes with it and some info that has been lost you have brought to light again. Rod your form of collecting is a great example of what can be done on a shoe string budget. You have a first class collection that has cost a lot of time but not money. Very smart stuff! |

Not too many years ago when I clicked on collections/lots on ebay..it was a different world..they were really collections and box lots...the stuff they are listing now is (in my humble opinion) inferior...if times are hard..why are not more collections and REAL BOX LOTS coming onto the market ??? |

I have noticed also that box buyes are over rated in recent times. The old albums and pages seem to be where the goodies are now for me! |

My perspective as a seller (of albums not stamps) correlate to the remarks made here: There is a slowdown in collectors' expenditure. However, the numbers of collectors who buy is not smaller than what it used to be 1-2 years ago. It just seems the amount spent on every sale is not as large as in previous years. My own interpretation is that people are collecting as passionately as before but don't feel as comfortable spending as they did before. |

Well, if the times are tough for some, someone forgot to tell the Indian States collectors. I've just finished marking up the prices realized from the most recent Murray Payne (UK, George VI specialists) auction.
How about this from Cochin: "1943 1 Anna 3 Pies on 1 Anna perf 13x13½ (SG 92c), lightly cancelled. ... There is a light stain at the left side ..." 2010 Gibbons catalogue value £4250, Estimated at £3,000 - sold for £4700. And there are plenty of other examples from the same auction: the 1943 9 Pies on 1½ Anna of 1921, mint hinged, with dried gum, sold for 136% of Gibbons catalogue value, at £950. And so on.
I was blown out of the water on the two lots from the auction I had bids on. Heaven help us all when the good times start to roll again. |
