I have to say that I was surprised to see this happen, or maybe not. I wonder what led him to that sudden departure? Might be some big changes in store. I hope the post office somehow survives. I just bought the fishing lure stamps ;)

I think there are a number of explanations for this rapid departure. He cooperated with DOGE giving them a " wish list " of cuts, most prominent, the controversial benefits funding the USPS has been stuck with over the past decade and a half that accounts for a significant portion of the USPS deficit. Even though the USPS has failed to make all of its required contributions, that is still quite a bit of funds sitting as low hanging fruit especially if they cut the USPS work force drastically. The plan seems to be to incorporate the Post Office into the Commerce Department, privatize the package delivery, and then the hard decision, what to do with letters size pieces and whether Congress will maintain its Constitutional power to establish and maintain a postal system, or just let the Executive Branch do as they will.

Another very low hanging fruit for the DOGE boys is all the outstandanding valid postage extant. I am sure they will demonetize it at some point soon. Use it while you can.

Given all the above, and the thousands of branch post offices likely to be closed and the 10s of thousands of USPS employees to be let go, that Mr. DeJoy sees the writing on the wall, the end of USPS, and is jumping ship. He may also want to revise his plans and ownership in the numerous trucking firms that have contracts with the USPS that he has part ownership of without the scrutiny his position would bring.

So far all of the doomsday predictions have not panned out. I will reserve judgement until we see what actually transpires. The bottom line is something needs to be done to stop the bleeding. If "10s of thousands of USPS employees" are actually going to be let go that is still a fraction of the 637,000 that work there. I personally know some that work there that are nothing more than doorstops and they will tell you so.

From what I read he resigned because of a clash with Musk when he refused to allow DOGE carte-blanche access.

I do not believe DOGE has the authority to demonetize old stamps.

The game plan is to get away with what you can through intimidation.

There is an endless supply of "information" about DOGE that is mostly inaccurate. The WH has done a poor job IMO communicating exactly how the process works. By looking at statutes and DOGE activity thus far we can see that it does not have the authority to fire anyone, close anything, demonetize stamps etc. What it does do and has done is open the books after reviewing systems and data and present information that is already there to decision makers that do have statutory authority to enact changes. If those decision makers decide that losing money in the name of achieving a certain outcome is acceptable so be it. If that decision maker thinks that taking our money and spending it on certain programs are not in our interest is a bad idea they can make changes. In many cases no changes will be lasting without Congress codifying them.

DOGE has been a boon to partisan media on both sides which was inevitable. Everything is divisive now, even trying to reduce a debt and deficit that is reaching biblical proportions and is unsustainable.

PS: I have noticed that members of Congress do not directly address and defend the oft times indefensible waste fraud and abuse itself but rather attack the process and the personalities exposing it. That is telling in that both sides did not do their job over the years which is mostly due to line item appropriation's being eliminated.

It was indeed unfortunate the line item veto is not allowed, so lots of pork gets put in.

Avoiding politics as that is not helpful to this thread, I will say I mailed an item to Chicago earlier this month and it took over 2.5 weeks. I mailed another item to the same address in Chicago on Monday when the PMG resigned and it arrived today. I doubt there was any connection but it makes a great NON-POLITICAL comment.

Do you honestly think that having a line item veto would be used on "pork"? Guaranteed that it would be used on entitlements so that more pork could be added 90% of the time.

I also believe line item veto would lead to political abuse leading to rewarding or punishing political friends and enemies. It had happened already with withholding funds for certain organizations.
