Just sorting out my Aussie stamps. I noticed that in my 1905 tasmanian 9d QV blue and 1911 pictorials the crownA watermark is upside down or sideways. Is this common? (in many other stamps an inverted watermrk is cause for celebration!)

Welcome aboard Baggie. The method printing means that watermarks for these may appear pointing to all four points of the compass. Upright and inverted of no significance, sideways a little better in rarity.
