Unless I've mis-read, I don't see if you said whether the stamp is watermarked?

I don't look for a watermark until I need to know. As revcollector said, a Type I rotary is always watermarked.

Yes, but the type three #488 is unwatermarked, and the type three #450 is watermarked. Either one could have one line removed from both ribbons to create a type one. I can't determine by the image if that could the case. If it is not watermarked, I'd lean toward that being an altered #488.

Pretty sure modifying a type III to be type I is really difficult. It's much more than the extra shading in the ribbons. That said, I can do a test, but some single line watermarks are very difficult to tell for certain and could be classified as unwatermarked.

If you're comfortable that is a #449, I recommend sending it to the PF for a cert.

As is very common, nothing obvious:

I use Ronsonol. While there are dark areas, and not just the cancel showing through, I can't be positive it is watermarked vs. unwatermarked.

Rotary watermarks can be very weak and difficult to see. Sometimes they have to remain in fluid for 5 to 10 minutes. And as stated above, it's all but impossible to turn a type III into a different type for someone who knows them. Too many differences.

I'll add that when I first look at the fluid soaked picture above, it seems maybe a backwards P in the upper left. If anyone wants me to post or send an up to 2400 dpi scan, I can.
