During 1989–1991, the USSR issued a series of three sets depicting traditional musical instruments from the various Soviet republics. In total, 11 of the 15 planned stamps were released. The remaining four stamps were never issued because the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Subsequently, two of the newly independent states used the original dies, formats, and printers to issue these stamps under their own national names. Here is the first set issued on September 2, 1989. The stamps were designed by A. Nasibunin and printed photogravure and recess. Russia SSR: Russian Spoons, Psaltery, Balalaika, Zhaleika and Accordion, engraved by V. Savelev. Ukraine SSR: Ukrainian Bandura, Trembita, Drymba, Svyril and Dulcimer, engraved by Yury Yermakov. Belarus SSR: Byelorussian Tambourine, Bastlya (fiddle), Lera and Dudka, engraved by V. Kazantsev. Uzbekistan SSR: Uzbek Nagors (drums), Rubab, Zang, Karnai and Gidzhak, engraved by Marina Silyanova. |

The French Revolution was a period of radical political and social upheaval in France that began in 1789 with the overthrow of the monarchy and the decline of aristocratic privilege. Influenced by Enlightenment ideas, the revolution promoted liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty, while also leading to violence such as the Reign of Terror. It profoundly shaped modern politics and helped spread revolutionary and nationalist ideas across Europe. The 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, designed by Mikhail Slonov, combined photogravure and engraved by N. Burenkin and Viktor Starikovsky and issued on July 7, 1989. Storming of the Bastille La Marseillaise, relief sculpture by François Rude, decorates the Arc de Triomphe and became one of the great visual symbols of the French Revolution and French patriotism. - Jean-Paul Marat was a radical journalist and politician whose fiery newspaper L'Ami du peuple ("The Friend of the People") made him one of the most influential voices of the Revolution. - Georges Jacques Danton was a leading revolutionary orator and statesman who played a major role in the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the French Republic. - Maximilien Robespierre was a dominant figure of the Revolution who led the Committee of Public Safety and became closely associated with the Reign of Terror. This stamp is not engraved. |

The SS Chelyuskin was a Soviet steamship built in Denmark in 1933 and named after the Russian explorer Semyon Chelyuskin. The ship became famous after attempting to navigate the Northern Sea Route across the Arctic Ocean in 1933–1934 under the leadership of explorer Otto Schmidt. Trapped and crushed by pack ice in the Chukchi Sea, the Chelyuskin sank in February 1934. Remarkably, almost all passengers and crew survived on the drifting ice until they were rescued in a dramatic airlift operation that became one of the Soviet Union's most celebrated polar rescue missions. The 50th Anniversary of Heroic Chelyuskin Voyage and Rescue, designed by Yuri Levinovsky, combined photogravure and engraved by N. Burenkin** and issued by the USSR on April 13, 1984. SS Chelyuskin sailing through Arctic ice during its historic attempt to navigate the Northern Sea Route. The dramatic sinking of the SS Chelyuskin after being crushed by pack ice in the Arctic Ocean. The aerial rescue of the Chelyuskin expedition survivors from the drifting Arctic ice camp. **Burenkin engraved the third stamp, not sure about the others. |
