The Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED, Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands) was the ruling communist party of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) from 1949 to 1989. Formed in 1946 through the merger of the Communist and Social Democratic parties in the Soviet occupation zone, the SED controlled the government, economy, and society under a one-party socialist system until the peaceful revolution of 1989 led to the collapse of communist rule.
