June 20 1901 - Belize, British Honduras to London, EnglandA registered letter with two directives: " Via New Orleans" then " Via New York". The address is High Road / Milburn / London NW. The stamps on the letter were issued (2-cents postage & postage) in 1891 and (5-cents postage & revenue) in 1899. They are respectively numbers 32 & 44 in the Stamp World online catalogue. and1922 - Georgetown, Grand Cayman to Matanzas, Cuba Postage was paid using a postal stationery envelope with a 2½ penny floral indicium. I checked out Hugo Ziegler in google only to find one reference in a 1923 Cuban philatelic pamphlet stating that he was a subscriber. I also wondered about the route the letter may have taken getting to its destination. Pure speculation on my part but below the map shows a guess. 1. Georgetown, Cayman Islands to Kingston, Jamaica by sea 2. Kingston. Jamaica to Havana, Cuba by sea 3. Havana to Matanzas overland. I will watch for a registered letter from that period to see what the routing really was back then. and finally1959 - St. Pierre & Miquelon to Toronto, Canada Hotel Robert answers a client's inquiry as the tourist season warms up. The hotel built in the 1920's famously had Al Capone as a guest. The hotel still exists today. The 20-franc stamp was issued in 1947. (SW.C # 366) The pair of 3-franc stamps issued in 1955 shows a refrigeration plant. (SW.C #377) |

Good morning, two today. Upper Matole, although this office was opened Dec 1, 1871 and closed 72 years later on Apr 30, 1943, it was never a really busy office. Patera's Postmaster Compensation only lists reports up until 1911 when the office reported it's highest earnings of $140.00. Compensation reports were filed in "odd" numbered years, so 1883 was $50.29 and 1885 was $56.68 This is Upper Matole's 3rd (of 9) postmark, their 2nd "fancy"(double ring, serifed lettering) postmark. California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 records it's usage from Jul 24, 1888 to Mar 26, 1894. Coming up in Aug, I'll show an 1883 strike of this postmark. Willits & San Fran. RPO, |

June 211967 - Hamilton, Bermuda to New York, USAOn June 21, 1967, The Chase Manhattan Bank received multiple registered letters from the Bank of Bermuda which were posted June 18. Shown here is the tag that would have been attached to the fourth packet. Insurance limitations per packet would have necessitated multiple shipments. The top value of the Bermuda buildings series of 1962 was used to pay the postage (SW.C # 183). |

Good morning, two today. Little River, this is Little River's first CDS, Men-2070. California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 records the usage from Apr 4, 1870 to Sep 19, 1880. The use of the grilled stamp (Scott # 88?) makes me believe this was mailed much closer to the preceding cover of this correspondence, shown on Apr 22, but I'll post it with this cover. Apr 22,1869 Jun 21, 18?? I think it was mailed Jun 21, 1869. and China Flat. |

June 22 1956 - Road Town, Tortola, Virgin Islands to Australia via registered mail. William Butler's covers are a gift to anyone looking for BWI items from the 1950's. Much of his mail was sent to his home at 22 Strathern, or to his workplace at 365 Dundas St. E. in Toronto. The workplace was Imperial Optical's lens factory at that time. Butler covers appears to only have postmarks from the main post office on each of the islands he collected. I have not seen much evidence that he sought out smaller post offices to have his mail sent home and abroad. I am told his covers came to market in the early 1970's through a stamp dealer on Victoria Street in Toronto. and1914 - Lome, Togo - a local letter The curious thing about this June 2014 postmark is that is two months before the occupation took place. So, how did that happen? Did the postmaster insert the slug for the 6 upside-down? Or was it produced as a convenience without a thought to having a current date by a postmaster allowing a favor to someone who had this sought-after stamp? |

Good morning, six for today. Falk was opened May 11, 1899 and closed on Feb 29, 1935, During their 35 years of operation, the office used five postmarks. This is their second, Hum-2010, California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 records it's usage from May 16,1909 to Nov 25, 1911. This one is 10 months and 21 days earlier. Trinidad, Fort Bragg, Arcata & Elinor RPO was supposed to supersede Eureka & Scotia. The Mobile Post Office Society catalog gives Sep 29,1911 as the beginning of Arcata & Elinor and Jun 24,1914 as the end date. Eureka & Scotia was still postmarking mail on Jan 7, 1913, see here; scroll down to the fourth entry. https://goscf.com/t/11887&whichpage=145#844518Here is the earliest Arcata & Elinor I've found. Ukiah with a possible auxiliary marker rather than an unreported postmark, and Piercy, |
