I've been collecting covers canceled in Chicken, Alaska, and I recently picked up two of them that each have a penciled notation on the back. Can anyone tell me what the notations AK-1081 and AK-0772 refer to? Is there an Alaskan reference work with these kinds of numbers?

There is "Postmarks of Territorial Alaska," originally by Bill Helbock and now in a revised 4th edition by Dr. Michael Senta. 9 markings are listed for chicken. The type format for the catalog starts at 1 for each town and is numerical.

Those numbers look like inventory codes to me.

Alaska Collectors Club has a catalog of postmarks for Statehood. Your two covers are pre-statehood, but it looks like their H06 example. I could not find a "key" to their notations, but it looks like the

See at https://www.esveld.nl/alaska/alaska.htm

Unfortunately, they did not record the range of dates indicating when a postmark was seen.

Their numbering system does not match the notation on your cover. I agree with paperhistory.

Note: Just noticed that the site response is slow, I am getting timeouts. The site is in the Netherlands.
