Many thanks, Cobie! I will come back to Malaysia The Common squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) is a small New World primate native to the tropical forests of northern South America, including Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, and parts of the Amazon Basin. It is easily recognized by its white facial mask, dark muzzle, and bright yellow-orange limbs. Highly social, it lives in large troops that may include dozens of individuals and feeds mainly on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Saimiri sciureus is currently classified as Least Concern, meaning it is not considered endangered, although habitat loss and deforestation may threaten local populations. Here is a small selection of stamps depicting the Common Squirrel Monkey. All of the stamps are from American countries. Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus), issued by Brazil on July 25, 2002 to publicize the SIVAM project ( Amazon Surveillance System), a Brazilian government project developed in the 1990s to monitor and protect the Amazon region. Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus) on stamps from Bolivia 1993, Nicaragua 1992, Suriname 1969, 1987, 2006. Squirrel monkey on postal stationary from Germany and on a Somali coin 2017. |

Thanks Laophil! BTW, the monkey in the Chili issue is a capuchin, not a squirrel monkey ... Not quite done with Malaysia yet: I really like this FDC with a 2022 issue,"Wildlife". The monkey is the stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides) an increasingly rare species with red-brown fur and a red face, and yes, a very short stumpy tail. The infants are born white. It is also one of the largest macaques, and possesses a rather meek temperament, in contrast to some other macaque species, most notable the Rhesus monkey. The FDC has the set of 4 and the MS with the tiger and cubs. Cancels: Tiger face; Hidupan Liar Terancam, 17.03.2022, Kuala Lumpur Cachets: Colour illustration of pangolins (Manis javanica) The photo is from https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/147040770 and was taken by Ricardo Cavalcante. It possibly shows a set of twins (exceedingly rare in wild monkeys, and reported on in the National Geographic). Even more remarkably, the twins were shown to have different fathers (Mammal Study 2018, DOI: 10.3106/ms2017-0081) |

Thanks laophil! Here is an issue from a country that seems to have only a limited nr of issues but they are rather nice compared to its earliest communist rule ones, Romania. It shown the silvery langur, with its bright orange infant - all grey langurs seem to like that colour in their babies ... |
