Grandson is 8 and has inherited a stamp collection from his other grandpa.

I'm not a collector myself but would like to help him. He's a little young to be doing research, collecting and cataloging himself but I'd like to help him understand what he has and how he could someday keep it going.

There is maybe 300 stamps or so from all over the place.

Is there some web sites that let you catalog what you have?

Not interested in selling anything, just trying to figure out best way to help him with it.

An eight-year old is the same age I was when I first started collecting stamps, and no one helped me which was one of the joys of doing that. It was my special hobby up in my room that I could enjoy which let me dream about faraway places and strange people. I wouldn't have minded having a stamp collecting friend but I was glad no one tried to teach me or organize me because it was my own hobby, not someone else's.

I mistakenly used Scotch tape at times to put stamps in the album, a mistake many of us made when we were young. But I soon came across stamp hinges which worked a lot better. My first album was pretty silly, cheap, and hugely incomplete but looking at all the images of stamps I did not own was fascinating. Fortunately, I did not have a massive or overwhelming album since that would have overwhelmed me and made me think I could never fill those spaces -- ever. That probably would have made me less enthusiastic as a collector. Some years later, I did end up with a massive two-volume world stamp album, but I never managed to make much progress with it. It was probably because it was so huge

A basic album, some hinges, and a few hundred stamps is all you need. I'd leave him mostly alone but maybe ask him to show you his album and what he'd found. Showing interest encourages kids, but managing what they do does not do that. And maybe buy him some packets of worldwide stamps to look at. I'd leave it at that. It will either catch fire with him or it won't.

Kids that age nowadays are good with computers. He can use a search AI and learn that way, ask for hours on various aspects, like "what are the common mistakes a starting collector makes, how to arrange stamps, " and " what are the main things that differ between definitives" (perf, WM, UV, paper, color, and so on. It will also boost his confidence, because these AI and programed for flattery ("putting the stamps with the picture facing you? Excellent idea.")
