With sadness and a deep sense of personal loss I learned of the passing of Jeff Shapiro on August 3 in Fayville, Massachusetts. Jeff Had been ill for some time and passed peacefully in his sleep. Jeff was not only a knowledgeable philatelist, and accomplished exhibitor, he was a servant to philately. Jeff has been a member of the Board of Vice Presidents of the American Philatelic Society, a board member of the Military Postal History Society, the Chairman of the Prexie Era Committee of the United States Stamp Society, an accredited APS judge, a volunteer at the Spellman Museum and a stalwart member of the Puget Sound Collectors Club. For years Jeff was a leader in the New England Federation of Stamp Clubs and instrumental in the success of the Boxborough Stamp Show. I am sure there are more organizations and societies he was involved with that I am not aware of. He put together award winning exhibits of German Inflation and Presidential Series postal history as well as other exhibits and was working towards his "30 frame" exhibit of the Win the War stamp. Besides his broad and deep knowledge of postal history and his great eye with a knack for findings diamonds in the rough he had an endearing and self-deprecating sense of humor. Many of us have lost a dear friend and mentor. I will greatly miss "dirtyoldcovers".
