July 31 Postmarked PRAIA, the capital of CAPE VERDE in 1959.  Shown on the left is CAPE VERDE # 278 (SW) issued in 1952. The set to which this stamp belongs features navigators. Also shown is #287 (SW) which commemorates an exhibition of religious art that was scheduled to open in 1951. The stamps from this series were issued in 1953. |

WOKING SURREY GREAT BRITAIN # 201 (SW) first issued in 1937. I used ImageSleuth to decipher the time on the postmark. At first, I thought how can that be. But then I thought someone posted their mail at the Ripley post office late at night and the letter carriers probably first showed up for work to sort mail for their morning rounds and discovered the letter in the box and applied the postmark - at the first hour of their shift. It is not only the baker who rises early in the morning. |

DOMINICA DOMINICA # 133 (SW) was first issued in 1951. Castle Bruce is a village on the east coast of Dominica. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, it is the largest settlement in St. David Parish. Castle Bruce in Dominica was named after Captain James Bruce, a British Royal Engineer who surveyed and bought a large valley there in the 1760s. He named the sugar plantation after himself and added the word "Castle" to make his estate home sound grand.  GAMBIA
