1860 Washington 3c (25) On Envelop

Given this has perforations, I would guess it to be the 25? It's in rough shape, but that's not my fault!

This is a 26, not a 25. Common stamp in badly damaged condition. It would have been a very nice cover in good condition, but this one is very poor.

This cover has an additional factor. Stephen Douglas whupped Abraham Lincoln in the 1858 Senatorial election in Illinois. Lincoln in the Lincoln Douglas debates of the summer of 1858 elevated his standing in the Whig party and his Cooper Union Address cemented his standing as an abolitionist.The Republican party arose out of the Whigs and the nominating convention was held in Chicago, Lincoln's home ground. He was a "dark horse" and got the nomination over the much better positioned Chase, and Seward. Thanks to Judge Davis.
Stephen Douglas on the other hand was the Northern Democratic candidate. Douglas was the "Popular sovereignty" candidate. The Democratic party in 1860 had split into Northern and southern factors, Breckenridge (later a Rebel General) was the Southern Democrat candidate. Lincoln wins the General election and today we live his vision,sort of.
This cover is a relic from that election,extolling the candidacy of Stephen (The Little Giant) Douglas and so would be worth more When put into that historical context.
An interesting anecdote. Lincoln arose to deliver his address at his first inauguration. He looked bewildered as to where to place his stovepipe hat. Stephen Douglas jumped up and took it from him.He remarked as he sat down"if I can't be president, I can at least hold the president's hat". Stephen died a year or so later.
I would think the cover in it's condition would bring 25.00 or more. I believe Cherrystone sold a nice looking Douglas campaign cover it brought 300 or so. I'm not sure.

Can't work out whether the amendations to the cover indicate that he's anointed by Christ or a suitable target for a Whitworth.

In his time, it was probably both, although this usage is surely the first one, he only lived about 6 more months.

I bought it for the potential historical context. 1860. I can't find anything on the recipient yet, but I keep trying.

Since he is given the title Esquire (Esq), he was very likely a lawyer.
