How Do You Find Local Carriers Post Office? Prexies On Cover Question

I have a bunch of single franking prexie 806 on cover with local address and post office.
How do you find historical carriers local post office?
Is there a book or site for this type of historical research?

You look it up in the corresponding July issue of the USPOD Postal Guide. <<<<That teaches you to fish.

Unless on John Becker does it sooner, I will look it up in 3-4 hours.

In this case, there is a street address and Roakone would clearly be large enough for city delivery, and is a "1st class" office. The 1954 date and 2 cent rate would point to this being a single-piece third class rate (effective Jan 1, 1949), in this case an unsealed Christmas card, which the envelope dimensions also point to. It may be sealed now, but no doubt unsealed when it passed through the mails. Also, it should have been cancelled without a date, but that was often overlooked, likely in the interest of speed during a time of high mail volume.

Local non-carrier items would typically look like a local/general delivery letter and be dated, missing a street address and be sealed like this cover:



As for lists, the Postal Guides varied over the years in the way they indicated carrier offices. As a convenient source for carrier information in this era, the July 1943 Postal Guide appears to be the last with the Classified List of Post Offices with Salaries (pages 895-962), which also indicates those with carrier service. Specifically an excert from the Virginia section, page 947, where,
G=Government owned building
F=City Delivery
V=Village Delivery

So, local delivery mail is really how the letter is addressed. No street number, Local carrier?
If I can go a little deeper, what is a local cover at non carrier post office and a local cover at carrier post office?

Any mailpiece addressed to the same town is a "local" item.
Some cities/towns/villages had carrier service and some did not. Those without carrier service meant you had to go get your own mail at the P.O.

Until July 1953, the carrier and non-carrier offices were listed in the July monthly postal guide which can be found on the Stampsmarter website. https://stampsmarter.org/index.html

https://stampsmarter.org/learning/Home_USPOD.html is a direct link to the library where you will find Postal Guides of the Prexie era to 1954 and the 1954-1970 Postal Bulletins.

The website: http://www.uspostalbulletins.com/ has the detailed daily bulletins as well as the post June 1954 information.

The postal Guides list all post offices in three manners. All three explain in a header box what information is listed. The forth list is what John Becker's listing of Virginia is taken from.

Local Carrier rates stopped on 3-26-44 meaning 3-25-44 was the last day of the special rate. The letter local carrier rate applied to a town (city), meaning all postal branches and offices be it one or one hundred. EXCEPT, RPO Clerk Offices in the town or city. They were not part of the city postmaster control but part of the RPO system and NOT local.

Non-Carrier local rates ended on 1-7-1968, meaning the last day of the special rate was 1-6-1968. In general the closer to 1-6-1968 a non-carrier cover is the more scarce it becomes.

These rates can be found in any one of the three editions of Tony W's (and Beecher's) US Postal Rate book. 3rd can be gotten from the APS. All appear in line as resale of used.
