Show Your US 1857 Perforated Stamps

Here is a nice one that I got today. it is position 2L9.
Neinken did not plate this position.
I wonder what kind of grade this would get.
Would they take into account the small spacing between the vertical stamps?
It showed a PF cert as a pair 2L9---12L9, with a small tear at bottom of 12L9.
I am guessing that was why it was separated.

For grading, it might be centered a bit low - but I am no grading expert, nor do I care to be.

Probably get at least 90.

I had a #20 on cover, but I also decided to get a nice off cover example from Plate 12, B relief (I think). I will see if I can plate it myself, but it's a pretty example with a red express cds. My first possibility is 87L12. The stamp above is just visible, and appears to be a type 1, which does correspond to 77L12. I based it off of the S, T, U, X, and Z ornaments being shaved at the top too.

Here's a turned cover I purchased that contains both the 1857 series and the newer 1861 series. The side with the #26 was mailed from Detroit to Chicago on 31 April(?) 1861 (the month is smudged), and the side with #65 was mailed in I believe 2(?) August 1862 (but the date is also smudged) from Chicago to Blackrock NY. I believe there was a paper shortage in this era so reusing a cover by inverting it would happen, but it's interesting to see the mixed series being used on the same cover.

I have one with a single #9 on each use; with yours it looks like the original cover sat around for a bit before being reused.

But ... There are only 30 days in April, so unlikely this would be from April 31, 1861. Any chance it could be Aug 31, 1861? If so, this could be a demonetized use, making it even more special.

Here's an Aug 30, 1861 demonetized cover from Chicago that got a rare ""Old Stamps/Not recognized" handstamp and sold for $10,000.

It would need such a handstamp(old stamps) in order to be worth big money, but demonetized uses are certainly quite collectible.

Hey everyone. Could I chalk this 24 up as a Type Va, ergo being a "type V with less trimming"? I tried searching on here and on Siegel hoping to find others that show more scrollwork, particularly at the bottom, but couldn't find anything that matches.

I'd also like to know about the smearing going on. Has it been over-inked?

ZebraMan and TxStamps, that would be very interesting if it was from 31 August as you note. The Detroit CDS appears legible enough to at least have 31 as a day, and an A for the first letter in the month. You are right that I forgot to account that April only has 30 days. I am going to look into it more. There is a cover guy I like to chat with I will show this cover to next time I meet with him.

solomon, you have a straddle-pane Type V here, positions 100L10 (partial stamp at left) and 91R10. Ink smears, bruises and other extraneous colorations are not uncommon on Type V stamps of this design.
