1898 - Saffi, Morocco to Foochow, China.

Using a 10-centimos postal card of Morocco Agencies at Saffi (July 29) duplex cancel A26, the card transited Tangier (August 5). The card arrived in Hong Kong (September 10) and was sent onward arriving at Foochow on September 16. The post card was created using Gibraltar postal stationery and the letter was short paid creating postage due markings. A Carl Frank envelope.

Good morning, four for today.

Arcata, a Patriotic cover with Arcata's first postmark, which is also the same date as the only known use of this CDS in California Town Postmarks 1850 -1935, they use a date with an asterisk for the LKU, Hum-240 used Sep 17,1862 to Mar 30 1865* This cover has no other marks but the flag does have 34 stars; four rows of seven two at top and two at the bottom with six stars in the center of the five rows. The 35th was added July 3 1863 when West Virginia was admitted to the Union.

Methuen & Co. Ltd. is an English publishing house.
It was founded in 1889 by Sir Algernon Methuen (1856–1924) and began publishing in London in 1892.


1940 - Coquilhatville, Belgian Congo to Indianapolis, Indiana, US.

The letter arrived in Leopoldville on September 25, then routed by air to Lisbon, Portugal after which it travelled by surface mail, arriving in Indianapolis on October 28. The letter was then re-directed to Champaign, Illinois. Along the way the mail was censored as the war was in progress.

The cover is sent by air within Congo. A connection was established already 1928. According to the instructions it should then be sent by surface mail to Lisboa. And from Lisboa to USA by air. It has also been remailed to Illinois in the USA

Mendocino, this is the second octagon CDS the town used.
California Town Postmarks 1850 - 1935 catalogs the postmark as Men-2350 and records use from Apr 14,1879 to Nov 21,1881.
I have managed to find 10 of these and have shown them in the last 11 months, including a new un-reported LKU of Jan 18, 1882.
This CDS uses Sept. rather than the usual Sep.
I have two other postmarks that use Sept. that I'll show later. One tomorrow and the other on the 27th.
