Rogdcam, I respect your opinions and in most cases agree with you assessments. In this case if they were making a sizaeable number of misidentifications and authenticating forgery and counterfit stamps as genuine. They would not stay in business very long. The public confidence in their business would be nonexistence.

Based on your posts which I read manytimes on this site. I think of you being very knowledgeable and outspoken in your opinion. Even when you maybe mistaken or wrong in your opinion. You defend it to the better end unless a known expert or well known collector in that field expresses their own opinions proven your to be in error. Even then to defend and accept theirs with reluctance. I for one like disagreements of opinions with the opinions a set out so a better for us to learn from. I for one have had an education on classic stamps free of charge here on this site. I learned a lot with much more to go. I think of you as a teacher and mentor of collectors like myself. I have used what I have learned from you to better my knowledge and improve my collection and to avoid what could have been a costly mistake on some stamps I was thinking about buying.

If no one else will say it I will thank you for your time in your postings and the opinions you give. I have learned a lot from you. I hope you will share more with us.

As far as public confidence goes, the PF survived the scandal of 1985 so I don't think making a few honest mistakes here and there would do anything to shake public trust.

I do not know of a scandal of 1985 with the PF. Not wanting to dig up old scandals. Could someone tell me what it was and the eventual out come of it? This could be of interest to more than just myself.

Maybe type out "Philatelic Foundation" or you'll end up reading about massive police malpractice by the Police Federation, who also survived a scandal of 1985.

I did find the news report in the Chicago Times. I was unaware of this scandal in 1985. It was eye opening and worrisome if they could still be some out there. Thank you for letting me know about this. This will make me look twice at any cert I get with a stamp.

Should anyone with a certificate issued by the PF dated before 1985 on high value stamps have them resubmitted to update the certificate.

The usual thought is that any cert more than 10 years old for a new purchase should be updated (some say 5 years). If one has had a stamp with a cert from before the time of the problem, then it probably does not need it until it is time to sell.

For me, certs from the period before the primary expertizing organizations had technology like the VSC6000 don't carry much weight beyond a basic ID. There are a LOT of 1990's certs that did not note reperforating, alterations and repairs that were subsequently detected upon resubmission. I have had this experience myself and a few of the stamps were returned to the auction firms based upon the new certs. Seigel, DFK and dealers like Rupp are good about obtaining new certs for pricier stamps, but ebay and many smaller auction firms are not.

If you are buying at auction and a newer cert is not present DO place the stamp(s) on extension. If they don't do extensions, consider that when bidding.

That extends to the other certs as well, 1980 and earlier.
