Both Amoy and Hong Kong were opened or ceded to British influence under the same historical moment—the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, which ended the First Opium War and ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain while making Amoy a treaty port for foreign trade. However, Amoy remained Chinese territory with a foreign international settlement, rather than becoming a British colony like Hong Kong.
