I am pretty much a novice at stamp collecting and I just picked up a collection that turned out to have an incredible amount of content. So as soon as I get started, I run into this. It appears to be a Scott #3, but it is postmarked. Is it just a fake? Thanks in advance.

It looks like a genuine #1, faded, and damaged (cut in to the margins on the sides). Still, it has a retail value of about $50.

The easiest way to identify the #1 and #3 is that on the original 1847 #1, the front of Franklin's shirt touches the oval frame to the right side of the F of FIVE, and on the 1875 reprint #3, the front of Franklin's shirt touches the oval frame near the left edge of the F of FIVE. Here is a #3 (image captured from the internet).

The #3 will usually have a sharp impression, while the #1 can be sharp, or can be more fuzzy, depending on when it was printed, whether the plate was fresh or worn. Also the #3 is almost always unused. It is possible to find a #3 or #4 postmarked, but it is very rare.
