I could have sworn that there was a technical term for these, but perhaps I'm misremembering.

Early 20th century U.S. covers where the sender cut up Washington-Franklins to create bicolor stamps, typically using the frame of one stamp with the vignette of another contrasting color.

These were technically illegal, but were typically condoned.

"Fantasy" is accurate, but I thought there was a more specific term.

I don't recall ever hearing a specific term for them, although they were a popular thing to do in the 20's and 30's, and not just with the W/F issues.

Stampus imatatio etymology

(My ridiculous Latin version of stamps, imitation multicolored)

I believe Bill Weiss used the term "transposed vignette"

Adding some context:

A card of these fantasies. Interesting in that if you look at the cancels on the portraits vs. the frames, many of these appear to have been created after the fact from used stamps, not used as such on covers.

I do think that some of the color combinations are aesthetically pleasing.

A pair of covers used later than the norm for these types of fantasies... looks like a serviceman was a bit bored.

And lastly, my most recent acquisition in this area, the earliest example I have seen, a 5-cent Columbian fantasy on cover; used in-period in 1893, 5 years before the earliest example referenced in the article above.

re: the 5 cent Columbian ...
The base plate of the steel duplex handstmp device is circular and will indeed leave an imprint of the arced edge at the top or bottom if rocked at bit (Hotchner's image shows a faint arc), but your example has a bottom arc of ink far too high to be an edge. In other words, the extraneous ink isn't in the right places, which causes me to suspect it is a 20th century fantasy made with a rubber stamp. Does it have a backstamp from a receiving station?
