I know, right?! That's why I was very happy to have been given the opportunity to celebrate his work in a ten-page article! If that didn't convert the unbelieving, I don't know what will! :-) Anyway, because of a long illness just before WW1, Karl Bickel turned into a bit of a philosopher and a contemplative man. His main goal in life would be to build a monument of peace, up in the Swiss mountains. The philosophy behind Karl Bickel's Paxmal monument was that through social relations and labour on the one hand and self-enrichment on the other, human beings could lead a life of fulfilment. This philosophy of his also shone through many of his stamp engravings. His two engravings for the 1939 Zurich National Exhibition set of Switzerland perfectly illustrate the two sides. The 10c value is a symbolisation of industry and agriculture, representing the wider society and one's labour in it.  The 20c, symbolising Swiss culture, represents self-enrichment through study and discussion.  |

April 18 is World Amateur Radio Day! Here are images of the four stamps in a set depicting amateur radio activities and a club emblem, designed by French artist Claude Haley (1923-1988), engraved by various French artists, and issued by Niger on October 1, 1965 to promote Niger's amateur radio clubs, Scott Nos. 163-66. - nethryk Radio interview, engraved by Charles Mazelin. Next would be Scott 585 Auguste Jean-Marie Pavie but nethryk has previously posted a superb scan of that stamp on page 180 France B229 1948 Designer & Engraver : Achille Ouvré Louis Auguste Blanqui 1805-1881 French socialist and political activist.  |

France Scott B254 1950 Engraver : Achille Ouvré
Design based on a portrait by Joseph Boze Louis Lazare Hoche (1768 - 1797) was a French soldier who rose to be general of the Revolutionary army.(Wikipedia) He was only 29 when he died .  I believe this is one of Ouvré's best work. |

 This is Ouvre's Oradour stamp mentioned above. If you would like a copy, lithograving, send me an email and I'll drop one in the mail. They seem to have been printed on two papers. This one has a darker look to it as does another one I have but I have another which is much lighter and looks like it is on a different paper. Does anyone know? |

 Here are the two types I mentioned above. The left hand stamp seems to have a wash of colour under the design that is not there on the right copy. I can't decide if this is different paper of simply a lighter print using less ink. |

Thanks for posting the Oradour stamp,I believe
now every one of Achille Ouvré's 1872 - 1951
French engraved stamps have been shown.
I realize he also worked on stamps for French Andorra,
Monaco & French Colonies and some of those have
also been posted here previously.
Thank you also for the kind offer but seeing the excellent
scans of Scott B195 is good enough for me.
There is nothing in Scott regarding paper varieties
but perhaps the Maury or Y&T might have something.
I would guess that the French State printer had difficulty
in the latter war years and immediately after to acquire
good quality stamp paper and had to use whatever they
could get.
