Collecting By Engraver

graphis, I'm hoping that you will add more Cheffers just as
jjarmstrong47 did.

He apparently engraved the annual Day of the Stamp issues
for the Saar.
Does anyone here have them and if so can we have some scans please?

I'm curious as to which engraver has the record for working
on the most countries stamps.

Henry Cheffer must be right up there.

I really like the two from the Saar.
The boy baron is the first time I've seen a Cheffer
stamp which did not include his name.

I find this sentence also interesting.

Two printings took place, the first on Press N° 5 from 9-17 June and the second on Press N° 2 from 13 June to 5 July.

This could mean that by 1938 the Atelier du timbre, Paris had
5 printing presses cranking out stamps or maybe only 4 since
Press N° 1 was perhaps that 1928 flat bed press which was no longer
in use after the first rotary press began printing in 1931.

But in just 1 colour????

I use Scott and Gibbons but occasionally I don't trust what they tell me. They both agree that the 1906 set for Bosnia and Herzegovenia, engraved by Schirnbock, was recess printing. The 1910 set for the emperor's birthday is another thing.

Scott says they are engraved which in their book means recess printed. Gibbons give no details which usually means that they are not.



I've looked at these and they don't look recess printed to me. The ink is lying very flat on the surface whereas on the 1906 issue it is raised.

Does anyone have a different catalogue where they can check these please?

My Michel Osterreich Spezial 2007 catalogue states that the 1910 set and the 1912 additional set are all recess-printed.

As for your previous Schirnböck query on page 209: as far as I know Schirnböck only got in touch with the Austrian postal authorities after a 'subsidy' from Emperor Franz Joseph allowed him to engrave De Fregger's 'Delivery of Imperialistic Gifts to Andreas Hofer in the Palace at Innsbruck', which was around 1896 I believe, so I doubt it very much that he was the engraver of those 1890 stamps.

Thanks Adrian. Now I can add them to the database with a clear conscience. I'll leave 1890 as unknown for now. I should hit 8000 stamps on the database tomorrow - about fifteen to go. Only about another 12000 or so.
