Three more from Norway, Romania and Poland By the way, this is also a test of the image naming system I use - thank you Rod222! Everything is in Windows Explorer and using the Search function for "bee" brings up everything in my collection in about 0.25 seconds. |

"Spice Bees" in Space was one of six student experiments flying on the USA's STS-107 Columbia Space Shuttle mission as part of the Space Technology and Research Students, or STARS, Program. Female carpenter bees bore tunnels in wood to create nests for their young. Students at Liechtenstein Gymnasium, Liechtenstein, hypothesized that the lack of gravity in space might cause the bees to make tunnels of different shapes than they do on Earth. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a "spice bee," a space shuttle, Earth and some students, printed by photogravure, and issued by Liechtenstein on March 4, 2002 to publicize this experiment, Scott No. 1223. Note: Launched on January 16, 2003, the Columbia orbiter disintegrated during reentry into the Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003, killing all seven of its crew members. - nethryk |

33th International Beekeeping Congress Apimondia in Split (Jugoslavia) - 1991

Owing to the war in former Yugoslavia, the Executive Council of Apimondia during its meeting held in Udine, Italy, in November 1991 decided to cancel the 33rd edition of the congress, which was originally scheduled to take place in Split, Croatia, in 1991, and to postpone until the congress of Beijing in 1993, granting Croatia a priority option on the assignment of a future congress as soon as things settle in the country. But the stamp was alredy issued. |

Painted Beehive Panels, Slovenia
...............Hiving a Swarm ................................... The Miller and His Wife ....................................... Sheperd Shooting at an Eagle........................ ........ A Girl Beating a Boy
In the second half of the 18th century beekeeping in Slovenia made significant progrees. Beehives at that time were horizontal and mostly made of wooden boards fixed together. The beehive fronts were often decorated. The first examples of painted beehive appeard in the mid-18th century continued to be decorated until the beginnig of the 20th century. Themes of paintings differ greatly. The early paintings depict religious themes. Themes of later paintings during the golden ages of this unique form of Slovenian folk art (1820-1860) were more of a secular nature, depicting satirical scenes, animals, fairy-tales, etc. |
