The Fair was originally scheduled for 1903 to celebrate the Centennial of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, but because of the large size of acreage (1,272 acres) and delays in building, the opening was postponed until 1904. One of the major delays in construction occurred in 1903 when flooding along the Mississippi River and other low lying areas brought a halt to the project. This resulted in the 1904 St. Louis Fair commemorating the acquisition of the vast territories known as the Louisiana Purchase. The Fair started on April 30, 1904 and ended on December 1, 1904. In all there are about 18 different cancels associated with the Fair. [ http://www.wichitastampclub.org/worldsfair.html ] There are two types shown here. One type reflects the original 1903 scheduled opening. Each is cancelled in Jan. and in Apr. of 1902. The other type, with the omission of the "1903" text, reflects the realization that, due to the flood, the fair would not take place until 1904. And it is cancelled in Feb. of 1904. |

Here's something you don't see too often: a misspelling on a slogan cancellation. There's only one T in "Christening." |

I am the editor of The Vermont Philatelist. We are just beginning a series which eventually will illustrate all the machine slogan cancels from the state of Vermont. The listing is in alphabetical and chronological order. The first installment is Barre (pronounced Barry) and part of Bennington. For the most part, there are no more machine cancels in Vermont except at the two sectional centers in Burlington and White River Junction (which also serves part of northern NH) Eventually the listing will be part of the Vermont Philatelic Society's website http://www.vermontps.org |

John Becker: Thanks very much for the illustrations of the two Vermont machine slogans. I had no record of the "FIGHT TB AND OTHER RESPIRATORY DISEASES" and it's not in the Machine Cancel Society's listing of Vermont material that I received a few years ago. Always nice to add to my listing.
I have found that many "postal historians" neglect modern material. I wonder if one of the reasons that they concentrate on older material is that even though the material may be more pricey, it's not that hard to find. You might not be able to own it yourself since it might be in some one else possession, but at least you know about.
To me the modern material is more challenging. No one has usually researched or written about it, so those of us who collect such material actually have to do some homework and not rely on others. In my editing of The Vermont Philatelist, I have actually had people complain that modern material isn't worth spending the time on. They only want to see classic material in TVP. My answer has been, "if we don't note it now, who will in 30 or 40 years."
BTW, I have a friend who is also named John Becker. He's one of the top Olympic memorabilia collectors in the country. |
