Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761) was a French physician credited as being the "father of modern dentistry". His seminal textbook, Le chirurgien dentiste, "The Surgeon Dentist," was published in 1728. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Fauchard and his book, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris after a portrait by French painter J. Le Bel, and issued by France on July 1, 1961 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Fauchard's death, Scott No. 1003, Y&T No. 1307.

Dirk Martens (c. 1446-1534) was a printer and editor in Flanders. In 1473, he and Johan van Westfalen started a printing press in Aalst, Belgium. Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp depicting Dirk Martens's printing press, designed by Belgian-born graphic artist Marc Séverin (1906-1987), combined engraved by Constant Spinoy and photogravure, and issued by Belgium on June 23, 1973 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the press, Scott No. B902. Note the peacefully sleeping dog lying underneath the busy press!

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Xavier María de Munibe e Idiáquez, Conde de Peñaflorida (Count of Peñaflorida) (1723-1785), an author and an important figure of Enlightenment Spain who founded an academy in Bergara in 1748 which would become the first Sociedad Económica de los Amigos del País (Economic Society of Friends of the Country), engraved by Pablo Sampedro Molero, and issued by Spain on February 24, 1977 to commemorate the bicentenary of the society, Scott No. 3030, Edifil No. 2402.

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Bohemian writer and translator Victorin Cornelius ze Vsehrd (1460-1520), author of the Nine Books of Laws, designed by Czech artist Vladimir Silovský (1891-1974), engraved by Jindra Schmidt, and issued by Czechoslovakia on July 15, 1960, Scott No. 997, SG No. 1173.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting Charlemagne (c. 742-814) at school with a helpful page holding a book, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on November 5, 1966, Scott No. 1167, Y&T No. 1497.

Here is an image of a stamp honoring Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg (c. 1395-1468), the German blacksmith, goldsmith, printer, and publisher who introduced printing to Europe, designed by Liechtenstein artist Martha Griebler (1948-2006), combined engraved by Wolfgang Seidel and photogravure, and issued by Liechtenstein on December 6, 1999, Scott No. 1159.

Pierre Athanase Larousse (1817-1875) was a French grammarian, lexicographer and encyclopaedist. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a likeness of Larousse, a quill pen and inkwell, and a number of books, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by France on May 11, 1968, Scott No. 1213, Y&T No. 1560.
