"Jacob wrestling with the angel," designed after a detail from a work by Catalan-Spanish muralist José María Sert (1874-1945), printed by photogravure, and issued by Spain on March 24, 1966 as one of a set of ten stamps honoring Sert, Scott No. 1344.

The image of the Midnight Angel comes from an antique greeting card produced around 1910. The illustration is attributed to American artist Ellen H. Clapsaddle (1865-1934), who was noted for her children's postcards.

This Christmas Issue stamp features an image of an angel with a trumpet. The design is based on an 1840 iron and copper weather vane that was originally located on the People's United Methodist Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Angel with Lute

This stamp features a detail of a fragment of a ca. 1480 fresco by Melozzo da Forli (1438 – 1494). Clad in red and green, an angel with a halo strums a lute and glances downward toward the left. The original fresco fragment, measuring 94 cm by 117 cm, is now in the Vatican Pinacoteca.

Here are images of the two similar stamps in a set depicting Archangel Saint Gabriel, patron saint of telecommunications, designed by Cândido Costa Pinto (1911-1976), printed by lithography, and issued by Portugal on March 24, 1962 to commemorate Saint Gabriel's Day, Scott Nos. 883 & 884.

The angels posted are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I never realized how many angels have been depicted on postage. Just wonderful. As gussyboy1 stated - I too hope more angels come out to play.

This advertising label of children's picture book publisher Josef Scholz of Mainz, Germany shows a cherub sitting atop a church steeple. The back of the label shows Mr. Scholz's listing of books and their illustrators.

According to Wikipedia, "A cherub is one of the unearthly beings who directly serves God according to Abrahamic religions...their original duty having been the protection of the Garden of Eden."
