The Port Townsend, WA post office... where you can typically find me, 3-4 times a week.

Built in 1893, it's a rather "solid looking" government edifice-- for many years it doubled as Post Office AND Customs House. It is the oldest federally constructed post office in the state of Washington, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Typically, there are two or three windows open, and almost ALWAYS a line... in spite of the fact that Port Townsend is only a city of just under 10,000 people. I like the way 120-odd years of footsteps have actually worn a shallow groove in the stone floor.

From time to time there is talk of moving the post office to a modern building in the suburbs-- mostly because the old building is not ADA compliant (no easy handicapped access; wheelchair access is through the back room)-- but it always causes an uproar, so the old post office lives on.

Hi Cynical

There is a pretty good chance that you may have seen a similar post office in Chesley, Ontario.

The government has a habit of 'duplicating' buildings. For example, most, if not all of the sanitarium hospitals were built in either an "X", "Y" or a "T" formation. For clock tower post offices, I read somwhere that there are three or four different 'basic' designs and the post office of Bracebridge adopted one of them.

I wouldn't be surprised to see other post offices across the country in the same style.

Regarding the top hat, I was thinking exactly the same thing when I first scanned this card. Out of all the post cards I have from my area, I think this is the only one showing a man wearing one.

It's been awhile since anyone added to the thread, so I thought I'd add some pics of my local post office here in Al Muladdah, Oman. It's a small town (population 8500) and the post office was recently renovated.

This is the entrance. The building is traditional Omani style.

Here's a view of the inside. Since this area is pretty small and the post office has interesting working hours (9am to 2pm Sat-Weds., 9-12 Thurs, closed fridays) it's difficult to use.

Here's another view of the outside as seen from the parking lot.
I usually use this post office since it's closer but they don't have many commmoratives, usually the regular definitives like the dhow series and the khanjar (traditional Omani knives).

Well I haven't seen many European Post Offices here yet so here are mine.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

We started pretty good with one of the most beautiful buildings in Amsterdam from that era build around 1899:

In 1987 the post-office moved out and it become a shopping center

What a shame.

Then the post moved into a other less pretty but still a monumental building at Single 250-56. This formal bank was shared with a bank (post-bank now ING).

So far so good.

On 28 October 2011 the Netherlands closed its last post office. And now we are stuck with:

I love those old style Royal Mail mailboxes. I've also seen them "on duty" in Qatar as well. Wish I'd taken pics..

A view from the street of the main post office in Ruwi. I went for a visit today and picked up a few things. Unfortunately, they didn't have any FDC's.

The typical Oman postbox. I like the unique shape.
