The will of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel established the prizes in 1895. The prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace were first awarded in 1901. The related Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was created in 1968. Between 1901 and 2013, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 561 times to 876 people and organizations.

Happy Birthday to influential French philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson (1859-1941), who was awarded the 1927 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his rich and vitalizing ideas and the brilliant skill with which they have been presented." Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Bergson, designed and engraved by Raoul Serres, and issued by France on November 7, 1959 to commemorate the philosopher's birth centenary, Scott No. 934, Y&T No. 1225, plus a photograph of Henri Bergson which was the model for this stamp's design. - nethryk  |

Maria Wis³awa Anna Szymborska was a Polish poet, essayist, translator got in 1996 the Nobel Prize in Literature "for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality". |

Ivo Andriæ a Yugoslav novelist and short story writer won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for the epic force with which he has traced themes and depicted human destinies drawn from the history of his country". His best know work is novel The Bridge on the Drina. |

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1935 was awarded jointly to Frederic Joliot (1900-1958) and Irene Joliot-Curie (1897-1956) "in recognition of their synthesis of new radioactive elements". |

The Nobel Prize in Physics 1903 - Henri Becquerel (1852-1908) ...............................................Pierre Curie (1859-1906) and Marie Curie (1867-1934)

Henri Becquerel was a French physicist and the discoverer of radioactivity. The SI unit for radioactivity, the becquerel (Bq), is named after him.
The prize was divided, one half awarded to him and the other half jointly to Pierre Curie and Marie Curie "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel".

Cordell Hull (1871-1955) was an American politician from Tennessee who was the longest serving U.S. Secretary of State, holding the position for 11 years (1933-1944) in the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during much of World War II. Hull received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for his role in establishing the United Nations, and was referred to by President Roosevelt as the "Father of the United Nations".
