Just received this Austrian stamp issued on January 21, 2015. The name of the country and the value is ingeniously incorporated in the design and basically it is the whole design. Call it weird, odd, unique or gimmicky but you have to admit it's different. At least compared to the thousands of stamps constantly being issued world wide year after showing the same things. Lithograving...I can make out "OSTERREICH"...in the main part of the stamp...what's the rest? Making my eyes go wonky trying to figure it out. |

The stamp was the result of a stamp design competition sponsored by Austria Post together with Die Presse newspaper. The theme was „Und Österreich bewegt sich doch" (And yet Austria does move forward. Nikolaus Schmidt, a Viennese graphic artist designed the stamp using the colours of the Austrian flag, red and white. Here is a link to a German stamp forum which announces all Austrian new issues. http://www.philaseiten.de/cgi-bin/i...15&CP=0&F=20 |

Wow, stamp designers are finally catching up to the '60s.
Maybe we'll get psychedelic designs in the next few years. |

I'm not sure this is the place to ask this question. I am new to the forum and I want to honor the rules about not starting a new post until I have enough posts in other conversations. My question centers on identifying an Austrian stamp (of sorts), so I hope this is the proper place to do that... I inherited some stamps a few months ago, and I am making my way through them, attempting to identify and catalogue each of them. I ran across an interesting stamp today that I need help with. The picture is below. All I have is the note written ( think) by my deceased grandfather. If you cannot read it, it says: "Artist proof. Austria, 1920-1925. Signed by artist." The stamp design has the name "Joseph Haydn" underneath it. Does anyone have any idea what this is? Where can I go to find out more? Thanks for your help! |

Hi Tyler Ted and welcome, don't worry about the forum or thread. It is not an issued Austrian stamp but a personal proof by Georg Wimmer who was an engraver employed by the Austrian State printer and did engrave many stamps. Check out this Stamp Engravers blog it explains it all. http://stampengravers.blogspot.ca/2...mposers.html |
