Quote: The San Diego Exposition cover is a neat oddity, Mr Crosby also used the wrong bear. that is a black bear, California's Flag features a Grizzly Bear. Differently shaped heads. |

Quote: So, how can you tell if it is a crosby cover? is it the thermo print only? No, that's not enough. There are a couple of other cachet makers who produced thermographed cachets. Usually you know it is Crosby by a combination of things, like the photo (but not all have photos), or subject matter. There is a catalog of Crosby covers, but it is hardly exhaustive, so there are probably some covers that might be hard to identify for certain. Mellone's Catalogue of First Day Covers is pretty exhaustive for Crosby FDC's, but he did so much more than just FDC's. His real specialty was Naval covers, and there are probably some resources for helping to identify which of those are his. My "expertise" is pretty much limited to airmail FDC's and WWII patriotic covers. There is a specialized catalog of the latter -- Sherman's "United States Patriotic Covers of World War II" -- which catalogs 453 Crosby patriotic covers, but says that counting variants would bring the number closer to 600. These are the kinds of resources that might be used to verify a Crosby cover. Basil |

wow, thats a lot of covers, they are very nice and "quirky" with the small photo in a printed frame, Any idea on how many were printed of each cover?
I suppose to collect properly you would need every resource available! |

I think that one develops a "feel" for Crosby covers after collecting them for a number of years. Some examples will have a Copyright notice by Crosby under the area in the upper right where the stamp would go. There are covers which are labeled as "Crosby" solely on the basis of the small pasted photo, which I don't feel is necessarily true. The type of description and font style in the rest of the cachet is also very important. Here are some other thermographic photo covers which I have a feeling are NOT Crosby, but I have never been able t discover anything which would prove my feeling. |

homemade Crosby cover on #10 envelope to fit the blocks of 4. However, it's not a FDC. 4 days later. |

Thank you, Glenn!
As for Crosbys in general, note the FDC cachet colors (usually) strongly match the issued stamp color. I find scattered mentions about Crosby naval covers but have never seen an attempt at a listing. |

Quote: I find scattered mentions about Crosby naval covers but have never seen an attempt at a listing. See Chapter II of "Walter G. Crosby, Philatelic Cachet Specialist," by William H. Stroebel. Stroebel's "catalog" is hardly exhaustive. It boasts "over 400 illustrations." Sherman's catalog of WWII patriotic covers lists 453 for Crosby just in the patriotic category. I would guess that there are at least a couple of thousand unique Crosby cachets, if not more. Some examples of Crosby naval covers here: http://www.navalcovermuseum.org/res..._Crosby.htmlI do think Mellone's catalog of FDC's and Sherman's of WWII patriotic covers are pretty extensive for Crosby. I am unaware of a catalog of his naval covers that would have comparable depth. (But I do not collect them, so I may be unaware of one that does exist.) Basil |
