Anyone know of or have a link to a Scott to Stanley Gibbons Cross Reference list or chart for British Commonwealth and Great Britain? I recently started collecting British Empire Colonies and Commonwealth (pre QEII) and noticed that there are some stamps listed by Stanley Gibbons and not Scott. Example, Malay Tiger Issues.

Got the same trouble here.. But since Scott and SG # are copyright protected, we are not supposed to use them / distribute them in our products... so strongly discouraged.

Last week, I had a hell of problem identifying a India Scott #4 vs #7, as all our forum experts responded with SG numbers... Bought a catalog eventually to fix that !

check out ***Please do not 'work-around' the rules*** (hyphening it since this website considers the company a spammer....maybe it was in early days but I don't thing so now). Many of the listings for British empire issues have both the American and British catalog number information. A good quick cross reference if you need it.

I have an SG part 1 and a Scott World Classic Specialised - if anyone needs a cross reference for British Empire please let me know Perhaps a thread for these requests might be the go.

Having both helps with ebay searches and also gives me some idea of what some of my non British Empire material might be worth.

An interesting story: when Robson Lowe issued volume 2 (Africa) of his encyclopaedias in 1949, there is a note in the acknowledgements stating that all references to Scott numbers (that had been used in volume 1 without permission) were going to be omitted from that and all subsequent volumes.

Lowe must have had permission from SG to use their numbers as a cross reference with his own Regent catalogue numbers, as both were used right through the series of 6 volumes.

It may be you, rather than the Catalogue perhaps?

Try Malaya~ Federated Malay States.

.

I have done some of these issues. SG lists far more color varieties and never finished but have cross referenced most other Malaya/Malaysia issues.

Ah, if the OP was referring to varieties, then that's true.
Gibbons will be more precise for most Commonwealth countries.

Its a pain going from the Scott Commonwealth to the Gibbons Commonwealth. I wish someone would come out with a compendium on this. Remember when you helped me out on the Aussie issues, Rod?

Indeed, Jack.
yet, I come from a background of using SG first, and I nearly gave up collecting, due to the Gibbons cataloguing. It irritated me immensely.

Since using Scott, I really enjoy my hobby, I mount commonwealth via Scott, and make extra pages to accomodate varieties shown in Gibbons.
