graphis - Many thanks for your close-ups of both S/Ss that clearly show the colour registration problems encountered in printing the souvenir sheet, which did not appear in the sheet stamp.

Here is a detail from the souvenir sheet you asked for...

There are differences especially in the light colours.
Look at the red lines in the cap of the postillion.
The sheet stamp lines are approx 125° whereas in the SS stamp
the lines run approx 30°.
Even the black direct has differences such as the
letters on the mail satchels.
Sheet stamp a T, SS stamp an R.

So going by what you mentioned previously the 3 indirect recess colours (orange,red & blue) where printed on one pass and
the direct recess black on the second.
I wonder if Slania engraved only the one colour direct recess
and other engravers did the colours?

On graphis' SS # I there are definite colour shifts but
I'm not so sure that's the problem with mine.

Looking at the red areas to the left of the horses' head
and the green area (bleeding together of the blue&orange inks)
to the right of the center horse and
the greenish mess around the window frame I think maybe
this was caused by some sort of malfunction of the ink
wiping system leaving too much ink on the chablon cylinder
which then transfer excess ink to the plate cylinder.

Poor quality control and not enough experience by the printing staff
in this new technique of two pass multicolour recess printing
probably also contributed in making a bad job.

lithograving - Both your and graphis' equipment and expertise in the use of it can work wonders for the study of these problems. Thank you very much.

Comparing the differences in your blow-ups with those of graphis' provides a wealth of varieties, which I, as a layman, am at a loss to explain.

Just why the red in your blow-ups spreads to the left in the right-hand part of your S/S without colour shifts (but not in either of those of graphis') while the blue spreads to the right of the horse's head and to the left of its legs?

Also, compare the red in the mailcoach driver's trousers on your S/S and the blue in both S/Ss of graphis'.

There seem to have been some changes in the colour scheme, IMO.

Still, these are very interesting blow-ups and I am most grateful for them to both of you.

Slania engraved the upper portion of the stamp based
on Scott 82.
That stamp was issued in 1912 and printed by the
Reichsdruckerei, Berlin.

Here are the first 15 items from a series of 23 world heavyweight boxing champions Slania must have done in the middle 1960's. The last cinderella is Cassius Clay 1964. The labels are approximately 48mm x 33mm in size, perf tip to perf tip.

Note the Star of David in the upper right corner of Max Baer's portrait. It is the only symbol on any of the 23 labels. I can scan the remaining 8 labels if anyone is interested.

In 1973, Slania engraved a set of stamps featuring Queen Margarethe.



The set was repeated in 1978 with different values and changing the spelling of the country name from the old style to the modern spelling.



When I was scanning these, I thought that the portraits were the same engraving but started "imagining" that they looked a bit different. When I looked more closely, I saw that there are quite a few small differences. To me, this looks like Slania has re-engraved the portrait rather than simply touching up a five year old die.
The hair contains a few examples. Here is the earlier engraving.



The spot highlighted on the left has a different number of dashes to the later engraving. There are also differences in the area highlighted on the right.



If this is indeed a completely new engraving, the consistency is truly remarkable.
