In this thread alone, I count over 25 stamps designed, though not engraved, by the Tunisian artist El-Mekki. All these engravers were amazing, no doubt about it. But the artwork they were engraving was his, so perhaps Hatem El-Mekki (1918-2003) should also be acknowledged. He was one of the great stamp designers of the modern era, in my opinion, which is one reason these are such remarkably beautiful stamps.
Modern Tunisian postage stamps rank right up there with Sweden, Switzerland, and a few other countries as the best stamp designs in the world. |
