They look like generic studio portraits.

Basically, the equivalent of going to the portrait studio in the mall and having some pictures made for the relatives.

No offense intended, but what would folks on a stamp collecting forum tell you about these that was not evident from looking at them? The space is not devoted to antique photographs, every town of any size in the US had professional photographers.

Since you've got two names & a date, how about posting to a genealogy website?

Cheers,

First of all, there was nothing inaccurate about my post. They are bog-standard CDVs from the 19th century worth a buck or so each.

To make this more stamp related - they don't have stamps on them. Some CDVs do have revenue stamps on them. The fact that they don't means that they weren't from the period from 1864-1866 when they were required.

For more than you might ever want to know about the Sun Tax, see: http://web.newsguy.com/bruceb/london/exhibit01.htm

I'll take a shot... Something around here I can help with. Using Carl Mautz' Biographies of Western Photographers he has D A Porter there in 1864-66 so could have had a revenue on it.

Piggott and Shaw were on 3rd in 1888 - Piggott was around solo and had sold a place earlier to SHaw so it is possible this is from 1884 or 85 though they seem to have worked together very briefly.

Bradley and Rulofson were at that address in San Fran from 1863-1883 so probably used revenues when they got going together. I would think 1870s, maybe early 80s for that one. Henry W Bradley started as a daguerreian artist in New Orleans in 1850. Yikes was gonna skip looking up William Henry Rulofson- he died from falling off the gallery roof Nov 1 1878 - perhaps intentionally, and they kept using his name. He started out in 1846 and there is a good deal of biographic information on him out there.

Jordan in DC is probably listed in Darrah's Stereoviews down to at least a decade range - that is a cabinet card not a CDV. 1st photograph is a mounted image but again, not a CDV.

You have enough named folks to narrow this all down more for some of them using the Google. Hope you post what you find.
