Austrian Stamp Engravers

Georg Wimmer 1892 – 1975 was a prolific and excellent engraver who during the late fifties and
throughout the 1960s was the top Austrian stamp engraver.

I totally agree with you about the quality of the
engraved stamps.
Yes in those days post office departments actually
cared about what went into stamp production.
They spent time,effort and expense in creating postage
stamps which they hoped would please the eye and
were at the same time advertisement/propaganda for
that country.

That was the last stamp he engraved.

Georg Wimmer ( 1892 – 1975 )

The stamp below was issued years after both the designer & engraver
had passed on.

Ferdinand Lorber had engraved the die and the stamp was intended to be issued in 1951 for the
150th Anniversary of the Birth of Johann Nepomuk Nestroy.

But for some reason nothing came of it.

The die was finally used in 1962 to print a stamp honouring the
100th Death Anniversary of Nestroy,playwright,actor,author
