Spain: Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El EscorialTo commemorate his victory over the King of France at Saint Quentin, Philips II of Spain commissioned Juan Bautista de Toledo with the construction of a monastery. The monastery was dedicated to Saint Lawrence on whose festive day, 10 August 1557, the Battle of Saint Quentin took place.
The construction lasted from 1563 until 1586. After the death of Juan Bautista de Toledo, Juan de Herrera's role in the project became more important. In 1576, Juan de Herrera assumed the position of master of the works. It was he who was responsible for the final design.
The monastery marks the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque. The style became known as 'Herreriano' and is considered the apogee of Spanish Mannerism.
The building was both a monastery of the Hieronymites and royal palace. It remained in use as royal palace from its conclusion until the early 1800s. It also is the royal pantheon where the kings of Spain from Carlos I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) onwards have their last resting place.
